What about Composers?

By Zil Distribution

Music industry roles and useful concepts.

A composer, or songwriter, is the main creative force behind a song. In many cases, the person who composes the music also writes the lyrics, though not always. It is important to distinguish between the composer and the performer, as they may not be the same person.

Why is the Composer Important?

The composer holds publishing rights to the composition. This means they are entitled to royalties every time the song is performed, played on the radio, streamed, or used in a film, commercial, or other media.

Composer vs. Performer

  • Composer/Songwriter: Creates the musical work (melody, lyrics, arrangement)
  • Performer/Recording Artist: Records and performs the musical work

Sometimes these are the same person, but often they are not. Both have distinct rights and revenue streams.

How Royalties Flow

  1. Mechanical Royalties: Paid when a composition is reproduced (streaming, downloads, physical copies)
  2. Performance Royalties: Paid when a composition is performed publicly (radio, live shows, TV)
  3. Sync Royalties: Paid when a composition is used in visual media (films, commercials, video games)

Understanding these distinctions is crucial for proper rights management and revenue collection.
